MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS JOURNEY

You cabin is located on the edge of the forest, close to a frozen lake and right next to a Husky Farm with 35 sled dogs. You will be the only guests staying in this place – and you will have access to the northern lights right on your doorstep!

This location is one of the best places to see the aurora. We have no light pollution, and we can see the northern lights in any direction, without obstacles. We have many years of experience with spotting northern lights, and we will warn you if there is any aurora. At this location, you will be able to enjoy the aurora in complete silence and solitude – far away from the crowds!

FOR WHO IS THIS JOURNEY?

This journey is for those that love nature and travel photography, and you have to be a bit adventurous!

You are expected to have a basic knowledge about your camera, but your guide Olav will be there to answer any questions about photography, both technical as well as with compositions.

You will need to bring a system camera and a tripod to taka photos of the northern lights, as well as a wideangle lens (28 mm or wider) with a large aperture, f2.8 or wider.

For wildlife you will need a telelens, eg. 100-400 mm lens. For landscapes a 24-70 mm lens is a good range.

(For APS-C: 18 mm or wider for northern lights, 70-300 mm or longer for wildlife, and 15-50 mm for landscape) (For M43: 14 mm or wider for northern lights, 50-200 mm or longer for wildlife, and 12-40 mm for landscapes)

ACTIVITIES

Together with your guide Olav, you will go out with a mini van every day, to find the best landscape locations, as well as local wildlife.  We will specifically look for moose and reindeer on our safaris. We will see beautiful winter landscapes, open rivers as well as frozen waterfalls.

There are good chances for northern lights every night. The first day we will teach you all you need to know to be able to take beautiful photos of the aurora. We will also teach you how to find the northern lights by yourself, using apps and weather forecasts.

During this week we will visit a local nature photographer and use her place to photograph Siberian Jays, a bird that is so typical for The North.

We will visit Helena and her reindeer, and get a chance to learn more about Sami culture. This will also give us a chance to photograph the reindeer from up close.

As a cherry on the cake, we will enjoy a dogsledding ride and prepare our lunch over a campfire.

YOUR HOSTS

Kristin and Olav and their pack of 35 huskies have been living on their arctic homestead for over 15 years. During this week, Kristin will be taking care of hospitality and cooking. She will make you feel right at home. Olav is a nature photographer and he will be your guide during all activities, as well as helping you with your photography.

THE GUESTHOUSE

We choose to stay in a wilderness cabin, because it will give us easy access to seeing the northern lights. The aurora is visible just outside your door!

Your log cabin has a basic, but comfortable standard. It is heated by a heat pump, which keeps the cabin at a constant comfortable temperature. There is electricity and we have 4G signal for internet. The water comes from a water canister with a tap. There is no shower, but there is a washing room inside the cabin, and you can also enjoy a traditional woodstove sauna for washing in the evenings. The toilet is an outhouse, but it does have a nice Styrofoam seat so you can sit comfortably warm even on the coldest days! There are two sleeping rooms, a 2- person room with 2 single beds as well as a 4-person room with 2 bunk beds.

FOOD

You will enjoy breakfast in your cabin every day. During some of our safaris, we will eat lunch in a restaurant. During our visit to the Sami reindeer camp, as well as during the dogsledding tour, lunch will be prepared lunch over a fire.

At night, we will enjoy our dinner in a timmerkåta, a kind of a wooden tipi with a fireplace in the middle, where you can sit comfortably on benches. The dinners are all typical local food, and we do have some tasty vegetarian options as well!

The aurora truly is a wonder of nature and it will not let itself be steered by man. We can of course never guarantee the northern lights. However, if there is any aurora activity and the sky is not too clouded, we are in one of the best locations to see the northern lights!

On arrival day, you are welcome around lunch time. We offer transfers from the train station in Murjek for the (night)train arriving around noon. Please mind that we do not offer any transfers for the train that arrives early in the morning! We can also pick you up from the bus stop in Vuollerim.

Checking out on the last day is after breakfast. If you are planning on taking the night train to Stockholm, you will leave on Friday night with the 21:00 hrs train, and we will take care of your transfer to the railway station in Murjek. If you leave by bus to Luleå (where the airport is) the bus leaves on Saturday morning at 08:20 hrs.

Many of our guests extend their holiday, by either arriving one day earlier, and stay a day longer. We recommend staying in a hotel in Luleå before you head home, and experience taking a walk on the frozen sea right from the city’s centre!

We will provide you with warm clothes for dogsledding, but you need to bring long underwear, warm socks, a hat and gloves. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen!

We would like to create a 100% smoke free environment for our guests. No smoking inside or outside the cabin.

We also want to ask you kindly, not to use any strongly perfumed products like deodorant spray with a strong scent or heavy perfume in the cabin. We thank you for your understanding!
